AUTHENTICATION OF
THE PLATE
Accompanying this presentation is a
letter dated February 23, 2004 and signed by
Denys Rusatmov, the Marketing Director of the
Pirkenhammer Porcelain Company. In that
document, he states unequivocally that the plate
up for auction was manufactured by Pirkenhammer
specifically for the Titanic porcelain
plate set in 1911. This
document is shown below. The original copy
of this letter will go to the winning bidder of
this auction.
Thrilled
by the reappearance of this original plate the
Pirkenhammer Porcelain Company has been
featuring this plate on their
website. (http://www.pirken-hammer.com/flashback_001.html)
The
plates produced for the Titanic were not sold on
the open market. The only place this Blackberry
plate could be found by the public was in the
2nd class staterooms of the
Titanic.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE
COMPANY
Pirkenhammer is a
trademark of porcelain produced in Brezova,
Karlovy Vary, since 1803. On June 21, 1822 the
company was granted a license of national
porcelain manufacturer. By that time,
Pirkenhammer porcelain was considered the best
in Bohemia, equal in quality to the finest
French examples. In 1831 Christian Fischer took
over as director. He attentively observed
the practice of the National Manufactory in
Sevres, France, which he considered his
model. The Vienna Fair in 1833 brought
Pirkenhammer the gold medal. One of the most
talented painters who worked for Pirkenhammer
was Andre Carriere. He was responsible for
determining Pirkenhammer style beginning in
1868. In 1874 the company opened a studio in
Paris, where Carriere worked as the only
decoration designer for Brezova.
PROVENANCE
The
personal story behind the plate, submitted by
Mr. Jay Sherman, the grand nephew of Eva Freada
Husted, as it appears on
http://www.pirken-hammer.com/flashback_001.html
In
April 1912 Eva Freada Husted, daughter of Nelson
Husted and Maggie (Squires) Husted, with her
newly wedded husband were going back to the
United States from England where they were
visiting their relatives. Eva was having such a
good time and didn't know when she would be able
to visit Britain again. She decided to extend
her stay for one more week, while her husband
goes on without her to get back to his
job.
One
week later, Eva arrived at the docks to board
her ship. The dock in Southampton looked fairly
chaotic due to the National Coal Strike that
opened at Alfreton in Derbyshire and spread
around the country to paralyze British
industries and put ship owners in
trouble.
On
her try to board her ship, Eva was informed that
she was given passage back to America on board
of the Titanic instead. The Titanic's employee
took Eva's hand and walked her onboard the ship.
As they walked to her second-class cabin, Eva
was astonished by the beauty of the liner. When
they got to her cabin, the man opened the door
for her and she walked inside. The first thing
she noticed was the little china plate sitting
on the dresser. After the man left, she started
looking at the plate closer. The longer she
looked at the plate, the more she wanted it.
Finally, she decided to take it as a memento to
remember her voyage on the
Titanic.
Eva
wrapped the plate in a napkin and placed it in
her purse. On the morning of April 15, a man
came to Eva's cabin door and told her to put on
her life belt and get up to the lifeboats. Eva
grabbed her purse and got on the deck of the
sinking ship.
As
Eva's lifeboat rowed away from the shipwreck,
she reached into her purse for a tissue and
bumped the plate with her hand.
The
wonderful plate that mesmerized the young girl
was manufactured by
Pirkenhammer.

A NOTE ON THE TITANIC PASSENGER

"There is
no definitive list for passengers and crew
aboard the Titanic when she went down since the
official lists contain many discrepancies and do
not take into account the presence of stowaways,
people traveling under assumed names or
substitutes."
